Kirk shares how GE is pushing the limits of additive manufacturing in its new $39-million flagship Center for Additive Technology Advancement located in Pittsburgh, PA. He will discuss how AM modalities such as fused deposition modeling, laser powder bed fusion and hybrid manufacturing are changing the economics of manufacturing. He will further touch on how AM is impacting design, materials, production, and servicing across industries from aerospace, power and automobile to medical, architectural, and consumer applications with some real-world examples from GE. He will conclude with practical ways manufacturers can start their AM journey.

Kirk leads the additive manufacturing team at the GE Center for Additive Technology Advancement (CATA), in Pittsburgh, PA. He has used additive technology to solve manufacturing problems since 2010. Prior to CATA, Kirk spent a short time outside of GE, preceded by 15+ years at GE Healthcare, Refractory Process Innovations.
With more than 25 years of experience in materials processing, primarily powder metallurgy, Kirk has conducted research on novel joining methods, novel molybdenum and tungsten alloys, recycling and sustainable manufacturing.
Kirk obtained his B.S. in materials engineering from Case Western Reserve University, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Purdue University. He completed postdoctoral work at Ohio State University and is a certified Six Sigma black belt.
